There were several concepts that we covered in class that were included in this movie. For instance, some of Weber’s concepts apply to the movie. We can see austerity in col. Behrani when he tries to save money in any way he can. He is really strict about his money. He bought Kathy’s house for a low price and we wants to make money by selling the house for double the amount that he bought it. Another concept is class as self-identification. The Behrani family saw themselves as high class even though they were not rich. They were from a high status in Iran and when they came to the United States they still considered themselves as high status. This can be seen when they try to keep appearances when the daughter and her husband come to see them. Col. Behrani tells them that the house is only for investment. He doesn’t want them to know and feels embarrassed that he is no longer from the same status as them. In addition, Durkheim’s concepts can be seen in the movie. We can see egoism in Col. Behrani. He is not very integrated in the society. He considers himself separate from the Americans. He says that they are spoiled and childish, and that they are not responsible.
