This video comes from the New View Campaign, which challenges the distorted images about sexuality used to sell medical/cosmetic procedures and drugs. Whereas Gilman’s concern was the misuse of scientific or medical legitimacy to control women, feminists today are further concerned about how such authority is leveraged in the pursuit of profit in the medical and pharmaceutical industries.
The video features a doctor/shark in the booming “cosmet0gynecology” market. His message: “We’re not telling women what’s wrong. They’ve had enough of that. We’re providing women what they want….Just options, sexy options.”
So is it all just a matter of “choice” or do marketing trends like these have the effect of indoctrinating women such that they resist their own freedom, in the way Gilman describes using her corset metaphor?
