Blog 5: Goffman’s Stigma

Stigma is a discrepancy between actual and virtual society that causes to alter our estimation of them downwards.  Stigma is an attribute that is deeply discrediting, but it also depends on the circumstances.  An attribute that stigmatizes a person who may be typical for another person and is therefore neither accepted nor rejected.

An example, of stigma would be getting information on a celebrity who does something out of the ordinary and the media tries to stir up controversy on the person.  It is normal in society to be viewed as a stereotype and people will look at you differently based on your status of what people say to try and put you down in anyway they can.
