Blog#3 Durkheim/Anomie/Economy

From the theoretical view of Durkheim, the American Dream is a casualty of what he coins “anomie,” or a lack of moral regulation. It can be argued that the reason our economy is where it is today because a severe lack of morality. Durkheim would probably say that the extreme exploitation of the lower class by the upper class resulted in a collapse of the economic system. The essence of this lack of morality is greed. As the rich grew richer, opportunistic greed compelled them to, instead of being content, still want more. There is no limit to success, and it does not matter at what moral or social expense it costs. Money is the end goal and the rulebook was thrown out the window.
