‘Casualties of the Crisis – Greece’

This report looks at the social consequences of Greece’s financial crisis and austerity regime from the varied perspectives of differently situated people. Of special interest is the last part (starting around 23:00) focused on the island of Ikaria. Long isolated from the mainland’s “capitalist,” consumer-oriented economy, the island has scarcely felt the crisis.  Referring to key concepts from Durkheim, residents articulate a shared sense of “solidarity,” which they link to Ikaria’s communal organization.
