Deviant Behavior (blog #3)

Deviance behavior in our society is caused by many due to something that society doesnt agree with and today there is alot of problems like economy problems. Many people work so much to accomplish and have the american dream but the much they work they become deviate from society. Deviance is a failure to conform to social norms. Social norms are different in one culture as opposed to another. For example, a deviant act can be committed in one society that breaks a social norm there, but may be normal for another society. Merton discussed deviance in terms of goals and means as part of his strain/anomie theory. Merton also explained individuals response to societal expectations and the means by which the individual pursued those goals were useful in understanding deviance. Crime is seen as a deviant action and the example of people stealing or killing people to steal is an action because the lower class has less then the middle class. stealing is looked as a innovator to achieve monetary success. if there was equality then our society would be different but unfortunately it wont happen but merton gave us an insight on how he viewed deviance and how we look at deviance today.
