Franz Fanon was born in Martinique. He studied medicine in France, and became a psychiatrist. During French-Algierian war, he served in a hospital in Algeria. Before his death which was at the age of 36, he wrote two books. The first one was called Black skin, White Masks and he wrote it in 1952. The other book was called The Wretched of the Earth, and this one was written in 1961.

Colonialism is the establishment, maintenance, acquisition and expansion of colonies in one territory by people from another territory, and Decolonization is not simply the removal of colonial structures, but especially, the deconstruction of colonial legacies in the mindset of formerly colonized peoples. The Wretched of the Earth served as the handbook for political leaders faced with decolonization.
